Ive loved the Rayman series for some time (my first exposure was Rayman 2: The Great Escape for the N64 and Rayman for the Game Boy Color). The Rayman games released for iOS and tvOS (Jungle Run, Fiesta Run, and Rayman Adventures) have been some of my favorite games on those platforms.
I was not a PC gamer when the original Rayman was released and I missed the PlayStation re-release, but I am very excited to play through the origin of a series that has brought me a lot of joy over the years.
As a long-time lover of the 2D platformer, I would have given this port 5 stars based solely on the fact that it represents a serious entry in the history of platformers on the App Store. Ive adjusted my rating to 4 stars because of some controller support issues and a confusing save system. Im using the SteelSeries Nimbus controller (MFi certified) with my iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 and Ive found I must restart the controller while the game is active onscreen to begin using it. This is a minor annoyance, but still something that should have been caught and fixed before the developers advertised "gamepad" support. Im also still confused by the save system and wish that the app supported cloud saves so I could pick up where I left off on multiple devices easily (currently working with the aforementioned iPads and an iPhone 6s). My main concern regarding saves is that its not clear when saves are created in game and I would like more control over this. If I know I am about to embark on a new level and want to ensure I dont waste the lives and power-ups Ive accumulated leading up to it, I would like to be able to create a save file that I can reload after exploring the area.
With this being a new release, I am sure updates and bug fixes are on the horizon. I just hope these address MFi controller support issues and allow players to directly manage saves--ideally it would be great to be able to upload save files to my iCloud storage for easy access on other devices.
Issues aside, I am very happy to see a classic, challenging platformer on iOS. Definitely worth the asking price!
